Q4 2023 Social Networking App Trends in Latin America

As the year 2023 came to a close, Latin America's digital landscape continued to evolve with social networking apps playing a significant role. Data from Sensor Tower provides us with a glimpse into the performance of the top five social networking applications on the unified platform (iOS and Android combined) in the region for the fourth quarter.
WhatsApp Messenger, a mainstay in communication, saw its revenue fluctuate around the $110M to $125M range throughout the quarter. Downloads peaked at 3.3M in the final week of December, marking a significant increase from 2.4M at the start of the quarter. Weekly active users remained steadily above 305M, with a slight dip to around 306M by the quarter's end.
Meta Platforms' flagship app, Facebook, experienced revenue numbers oscillating between $77K and $104K. Downloads saw a steady flow with a slight bump to 2.5M in mid-October and December, while weekly active users hovered around 344M, closing the quarter slightly above 345M.
Telegram Messenger, known for its security features, showed revenue ranging from approximately $38K to $55K by year-end. Its downloads showed a peak of 1.6M in mid-October before settling down to around 1.2M by the end of December. Weekly active users exhibited a gradual decline from 30M to just under 29M.
Threads, an Instagram app, despite generating no revenue, saw an impressive download spike, jumping from 755K to over 1.9M in early December, followed by a slight decrease to 1.5M. Its weekly active users surged from 8.9M to a peak of 12M in mid-October, ending the quarter with 10M active users.
Lastly, Messenger, also by Meta Platforms, showed revenues starting at $462K and tapering off to $390K. Download numbers remained consistent with over 1M throughout the quarter, and weekly active users started at 78M, with a marginal decrease to just over 73M by the end of December.
